TRAVEL INSURANCE GUIDE
Why Travel Insurance Deserves a Place in Every Travel Plan
A well-planned journey still includes things no traveler can control. Travel insurance may help protect both your trip investment and your access to assistance when plans change unexpectedly.
Travel insurance is not about expecting something to go wrong. It is about understanding which financial and logistical risks you are comfortable carrying yourself—and which ones you may prefer to insure.
Four Reasons Travelers Consider Coverage
Trip Cancellation or Interruption
Depending on the policy and the reason involved, benefits may reimburse certain prepaid, nonrefundable costs if a covered event prevents you from traveling or requires you to return home early.
Medical Care and Evacuation
Health coverage may work differently outside the United States. Some plans include eligible emergency medical treatment, evacuation or transportation assistance, subject to the policy’s terms and limits.
Delays and Baggage Problems
Some policies offer benefits for qualifying travel delays, missed connections, delayed baggage or lost belongings after required waiting periods and documentation.
Timing Can Matter
Travel insurance is generally best considered soon after making the first trip payment. Certain time-sensitive benefits or waivers may only be available when the plan is purchased within a stated period and all eligibility requirements are met.
Travel Insurance Does Not Cover Everything
Coverage depends on the specific plan. Covered reasons, exclusions, benefit limits, documentation requirements and pre-existing medical condition provisions vary. “Cancel for any reason” coverage, when available, usually has separate purchase deadlines, eligibility rules and reimbursement limits.
Questions Worth Asking
- Which cancellation and interruption reasons are covered?
- What emergency medical and evacuation limits apply?
- How are pre-existing medical conditions addressed?
- What deadlines apply after the first trip payment?
- What receipts, notices or other documentation would a claim require?
- Are your destinations, activities and total trip cost included correctly?
